The component that I will be discussing as the topic of this article is the spark plug. More specifically, what kind of spark plug does a Stihl chainsaw use.
Stihl Chainsaws use two different spark plugs depending on the chainsaw model. The NGK BPMR7A and the NGK CMR6H are the two spark plugs used in Stihl chainsaws.

Are spark plug wrenches Universal?
Spark plug wrenches are universal in the sense they are not chainsaw brand specific. However, the hex head of the spark plug needs to be matched to the size of the spark plug wrench. For example the NGK BPMR7A Spark Plug has a 3/4″ (19mm) hex head and needs a spark plug wrench with a 3/4″ (19mm) wrench to remove and install the spark plug.
How do I know if my chainsaw spark plug is bad?
A bad spark plug is determined by removing the spark plug and examining the spark plug electrode end of the spark plug. If the spark plug electrode end is discolored, pitted, or caked in a dark substance called carbon the spark plug is fouled and will need to be replaced.
If the spark plug appears to be ok you will need to check to see if the engine coil is firing. The easiest and safest way to check the ignition coil fire is with an inline spark plug tester. Inline spark plug testers are cheap and available in most hardware stores.
How do you check a spark plug on a Stihl chainsaw?
If your Stihl chainsaw is not starting and you think your spark plug may be fouled you need to check the ignition coil and spark plug.
To check the ignition coil use and inline spark tester. Checking the spark plug requires the removal of the spark plug and examining the electrode end of the spark plug for carbon build-up or heat damage.
